This companion, whose original name was Adi ibn Khatham, is also known as Abu Tarif.
In the ninth year of Hijri, a trip was organized to the Toy tribe living around Tabuk. The head of the tribe, Adi ibn Hotam, saw the companions and ran away. The captives were brought to the presence of our Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. He sent his sister among the captives to call Adi.
Adi ibn Hotam was in the presence of the rulers of Rome and Persia and saw their rude treatment. Probably for this reason, he did not want to meet the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace. But her sister's words about the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, gave her courage and she decided to go to him.
Let's hear what happened after that from Adiy ibn Hotam himself: "The Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, was in the mosque. I went. I said hello.
- Who are you? - they asked.
"I am Adi ibn Hotam," I said.
He got up and invited them to their house. We met an old woman on the road. He said he needed the toilet. The Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, listened to the woman and released her needs. I looked at him and said, "This man is not a king!" I thought. Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, took me to his home. A blanket filled with wool and written:
"Sit here," they said.
When I said, "You sit down," they said, "Sit down." I sat on the blanket and he sat on the floor. I thought to myself, "By God, the king does not do this. This person is not a king, he is a broad-bred breed," he thought.
- Adi ibn Hotam, become a Muslim. You will survive, they said.
"I have my own religion," I answered.
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "I know your religion better than you. Are you religious? You will take a quarter of the spoils of the tribe. This is not halal in your religion," they said. Then they continued:
- What prevents you from entering Islam? What is taking away from "La ilaha illallah"? Is there any god other than Allah? Why are you fighting? Is there anyone greater than Allah?
Such a warm, sweet person could not be a liar. I immediately said the word of shahadah and became a Muslim. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said with a smile on his blessed face: "Those who wish for punishment are the Jews, and those who are lost are the Christians."
Thus, when Adi became a Muslim, he was responsible for inviting his tribe and neighboring tribes to Islam, and collecting their zakat, with the recommendations of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. He caused all his tribesmen to convert to Islam. The first person in the history of Islam who collected zakat from his people was Adi ibn Khatam.
He also participated in Wado Hajj. After the death of the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, during the time of Abu Bakr, when many apostatized and left Islam altogether, he advised the tribe of Adi and dissuaded them from such apostasy. The Tay tribe remained in Islam.
After the construction of Kufa, Adi ibn Hotam moved to a new city. During the reign of Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, he went to Baghdad and supervised the treasury. In the battles of Jamal and Siffin, Ali Karramallahu was on the side of Wajhahu. After Hazrat Ali, he returned to Kufa and died in 69 AH at the age of 120.
He narrated sixty-six hadiths, some of which were included in the Sahihs of Bukhari and Muslim.
May God be pleased with him!
